The Main Reason I Moved From Traditional Book-Selling To Ministry

I explained the main reason I moved my books from the traditional book-selling model to a faith-based ministry on my previous website. But since there are new readers unaware of that reason, I thought it might be helpful to give them access to this post.

The Reason I Write

Let me preface my explanation by saying that my heart’s desire is to honor the Lord with the gift of writing He has given me.

How I pray He will use my humble (and often clumsy) attempts at writing to make Him known. Based on reader reviews and personal correspondence, I believe He has.

If just one person’s heart is moved toward the Lord as a result of reading the stories, Bible studies, and devotionals I write, then the hard work is more than worth it.

The Reason I Moved My Books From the Traditional Book-Selling Model

During the 2016 presidential race I sensed our country had changed drastically. Yes, the normal mud-slinging still existed. But somehow along the way, a civil war of ideologies divided our nation.

During that time, I woke up to the fact that many of the companies I supported with my shopping habits used their profits to fund agendas which were spiritually detrimental to people.

That prompted me to change my shopping habits.

But the very places that sold my books were among the worst offenders.

It was a wake-up call like no other.

But it also created a huge dilemma.

The Reason For My Dilemma and My Decision

It ripped at my heart that these online book stores were making a profit off my stories and then using those profits to fund ungodly agendas.

How could I write Christian books and then turn a blind eye to what was happening?

The answer?

I couldn’t.

So I moved my books to free status and asked for donations instead.

So What Happened Next?

I’d be lying if I said the decision to move from the traditional book-selling method to a faith-based ministry was easy.

Since then my writing income has dropped considerably.

To make ends meet, I let go of my expensive website and built this free website instead. I now send out subscriber emails in batches rather than pay for the service which sent those emails all at once. And that’s really just scratching the surface.

In spite of what I’ve had to do without, I have absolute peace about the decision. The Lord is faithful to provide. I may not have everything I want, but I have above and beyond what I need in Him.

Continuing The Work

Some readers have asked if I will continue to write books. My answer is the same as it has always been: “Yes, as the Lord wills.” I honestly have more story ideas than I will ever be able to complete in my lifetime.

But I also need to be contributing to my family’s living expenses. That is why I have started looking for additional ways to help meet our needs.

This could mean the books don’t come out as frequently as they once did. But even in this I trust our sovereign God has all things under His control.

2019 Update

At the end of May 2019, I received bad news about my vision. (If you’re interested, you can find out more about my vision loss here.)

It took a few months of praying and talking it out with my husband and readers before I decided that I once again had to make some changes.

I love offering my books for free, but with my vision issues, I also struggled with the need to help bring in income for me and my family. While there were many kind people who donated, there were more who did not. So after much going back and forth, I decided to leave most of my books for free and experiment with trying to sell the others here on my website.

Ways to Support This Writing Ministry

Prayer Support

Honestly, this type of support means more to me than any other. Here is a list of specific ways you can pray for my writing ministry:

  • Pray that the Lord will continue to give me the time and ability to write stories for Him and about Him.
  • Pray that the books will land in the hands of those who need them — both believers and unbelievers alike.
  • Pray that the stories will both lead people to the Lord and closer to the Lord, bringing about a harvest of changed lives for Jesus and His kingdom.
  • It’s been my experience that any time a person sincerely steps out in faith to serve the Lord, our adversary won’t be far behind trying to destroy. Please pray that Satan won’t be allowed a foothold and that the Lord will protect this ministry.

Share the Books With Others

In the digital age in which we live, you can share the books with others by so many avenues. Here are a few examples:

  • Leave reviews at the sites where you downloaded the books.
  • Share the books via word-of-mouth.
  • Let others know where they can get the books.
  • Share the books on your social media channels.
  • Ask your church or public library to purchase the books. I can give discounts when individuals or libraries purchase the entire set.

Financial support — no matter the amount — is greatly appreciated.

  1. Thanks for staying true to your convictions. I will try to support your ministry. I am also a writer and teacher and find it hard to reconcile the big business of Christian books, music, speaking etc with Isaiah 55…come buy wine and meat without price…God’s truths and worship are valuable and priceless. God bless you!

  2. Thank you, Cathy, for standing strong and faithfully serving the Lord.
You are without a doubt one of my favorite Christian authors and your books have blessed me so mightily. I have gifted them and will continue to do so; as well as support your ministry in as many ways as possible. You remain in my heart and prayers.
May God continue to guide, encourage, comfort, inspire and bless you mightily!

  4. I just finished reading “Pieces on Earth”. I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the way that you told the Gospel message the whole way through, along with other lessons everyone needs to be reminded of. This is the first of your books I have read. I was unaware that you offer your books for free and I am so glad to know the reason behind this choice.

  5. Cathy, I just clicked on your website link from the FB page Christian Authors Worldwide. The moment I starting reading, I connected with your heart! I will definitely be praying for your writing ministry because you have spoken the truth so wonderfully. As much as I am able, I too, will be making donations. Although it may not be much (as I am gearing up for my first ever Mission’s Trip abroad), I do know that a little here, a little there, can add up to being much with God’s hands on it. May the Lord bless you for being another child who stands on his truth! A Sister-in-Christ!

I will pray for your ministry to grow and that God will give you HIS wisdom as you write more for us to enjoy! God bless you Cathy!!

    1. Teresa, thank you for blessing me with your kind and encouraging words. I’m so glad the books were a break for you. And thank you for your service as a nurse. I’m awed by people in that line of work. I’m working on book #8 now! 🙂 God bless you and your family!

  8. Thank you so much for your writing, I love to read your books and even more the testimony behind your providing them for free. I started reading Christian Romance novels around age 12 (a bit young, I would say) and just recently got into the ebook world. I have read quite a few books and look forward to reading the rest. I will graduate from the University of Arkansas in less than a week and plan to spend extra summer moments tucked away with a book (hopefully not until 2am like now, but I couldn’t put it down and needed a break from studying for final exams 😂). May God bless you and your ministry! I was born and raised in Springdale, so it tickled me to see an author with a northwest Arkansas connection, so neat! I hope to be able to contribute more in days to come. Blessings! -Julie
[this note was supposed to be attached to a donation, but it kept saying that something went wrong. I will try at a later date 😊]

Our son and daughter-in-love are both alums. Sorry the donation thing wasn’t working. But I appreciate the effort! 🙂 Prayers for you as you finish up your college years and move on!
