WARNING: I know that some readers prefer their own mental images of Miller’s Creek characters, so if you are one of those readers, don’t go any further! 😉 This post is to introduce the new cast members in the Miller’s Creek novels, specifically those in the latest book STILL I WILL FOLLOW.
One of the things I like to do while writing a new book is to choose actors and actresses that I envision in the roles. (Hmmm, maybe that’s why readers often tell me that the books play out like a movie in their minds. And that’s exactly what happens to me as I write!)
Without further ado, allow me to introduce the cast of STILL I WILL FOLLOW. (And if any of you know a movie producer who might actually be interested in creating a film version of the Miller’s Creek novels, please send them my way! 😀 )
The New Cast Members in the Miller’s Creek Novels
No spoilers for those of you who haven’t read the book, I promise!
Just a little background on Bella Masterson, the female lead in the story. Though she swore to never return to Miller’s Creek because of the hurt and betrayal she experienced as a teen-ager, she’s back in town at the Lord’s leading to care for her ailing father.
The only problem? She can’t avoid Clay Barnes forever.
To play the part of Bella, I chose actress Jean Smart.
Why? Because she is/has:
- older (and Bella’s character is in her late 30s).
- beautiful (and Bella is beautiful; even her name indicates beauty).
- that Southern girl charm (or in this case, Texas gal charm).
Now for a bit of background on Clay Barnes, the male lead in the story. Those of you who have read the earlier books will recognize him as the best friend and ranch manager for Steve Miller (the mayor of Miller’s Creek and owner of Miller’s Ranch from the first Miller’s Creek book TEXAS ROADS).
Clay is a tough-as-nails cowboy, very much defined by his job — one handed down to him by his grandfather and father before him.
But he’s also allowed his painful past with Bella to define him. Though it’s been over twenty years, he can’t get past the way she betrayed him all those years ago.
Now she’s back in town and pretty as ever. Perhaps the best way to deal with her is to make sure she leaves Miller’s Creek.
This time forever.
To play the part of Clay, I chose actor Dennis Quaid.
Why? Because he is/has:
- the look of a cowboy and/or ranch manager.
- a good ol’ Texas boy.
Clint Nichols is the new doctor in town. Though only a minor character, Clint plays a major role. He is one of the few people in town who gives Bella a chance.
For the part of Clint, I chose actor Patrick Dempsey.
Why? Because he has that doctor look about him and serves as a good second leading man.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Clint Nichols shows up in a future novel as the main character.
Another secondary character in the story is Clay’s younger brother Keith, who serves as a pastor at a nearby lake church.
For the role of Keith I chose actor Kevin Kostner.
Why? Because I think he and Dennis Quaid could easily be brothers, and he fits the character of a kind pastor who is eager to see people and relationships restored.
Here’s another character that might show up as a main character in a later book.
(Note to self: As matchmaker, I mean author, I need to find some gals for these two guys!)
Every story needs a bad guy, right? Frank Ziffarano is the villain in STILL I WILL FOLLOW.
Handsome and charming on the outside, underneath he is manipulative and scheming and up to no good.
For his character I chose actor Adolfo Martinez. I think he could easily portray the two-sided character of Ziff.
